Voice Over IP
With the use of Voice over IP gateway or Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) you can make a call through a broadband connection instead of through your normal (analog) phone line. It works like this: The VOIP takes your voice and breaks it down into tiny bits of data and then sends it over the Internet to another location where they are reassembled into a voice again. (Think Star Trek and beam me up!)
Some voice over IP services require both the sender and receiver to have the same service while others allow anyone with a phone number to use the VOIP service. This would include your local, long distance, mobile, and even international numbers. Depending on the voice over service you could be required to initiate calls with your computer whereas others will allow you to use a special Voice Over IP phone or even a traditional phone with an adapter.
The customer service centers of today are more often using VOIP call center services. They are helpful to call centers in two main ways: one, it makes it easier for IT administrators to manage interactions with individual customers as well as with routing calls and data to remote call center operators, and two, it helps to reduce overall network costs by reducing the number of communications technologies a company will need to support.
The key to VOIP PBX (PBX, or Private Branch Exchange, is a small version of the phone company's larger central office) is an attendant console or switchboard that can handle local, long distance, and international phone systems. Customers or colleagues who are not on your local PBX can still call directly to your number without going through the attendant console. Check with your local phone company to make sure your trunk lines are configured correctly, referred to as Direct Inward Dialing or DID.
Some important things to consider in the use of any VoIP services is:
- The instruments used
- The inside wiring
- Access lines
- Bandwidth
- Ingress POP
- Egress POP
- PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)
If this all seems confusing, it can be but with enough research and consultation with your VoIp services company you should be able to understand the process and make calls the modern way!
