The CE mark is a marking that certifies that a particular product satisfies the requirements of the European Union (EU), one of the most powerful multi-national organizations in the world today. The EU publishes directives regarding different kinds of products so that the manufacturing and distribution of goods is certified and regulated within the European Union's boundaries. The mark is valid in such non-EU countries as Iceland , Norway and Switzerland – a total of nearly 30 countries accept the CE requirements.
So what does the “CE” stand for in CE certification? Officially, nothing at all. However, some people believe that CE once stood for a French term meaning European Community or Conformity. At any rate, designated products must carry the right CE marks to prove their compliance with EU requirements. Sometimes an outside product-testing house evaluates different products and their accompanying documentation to determine CE compliance, but in other cases companies perform their own internal CE certifying processes.
Approximately two-thirds of more of goods sold within the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) must follow the directives of the EU. EU importers must be responsible for their imported products as well as for their workplace machinery. This quality control mechanism is improving the European economy and provides a challenge to outside manufacturers to bring their goods into conformity with CE standards. CE-related legal action may be taken against a company that violates the CE guidelines.
One especially positive aspect of CE marking is that it enables a CE compliant product to be distributed freely within the boundaries of the EU and the other CE member nations.
