Accounting Firms
Are you familiar with the Big 6 accounting firms in the United States ? We'll name those for you and explain a little about each one. An accounting firm is a business that offers tax services and financial consulting. If you're looking for a smaller accounting firm or one in your area, we recommend using a “local” search from a major search engine such as Google or Yahoo! The largest accountancy firms in the world are currently the following, in decreasing order of revenue:
- Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu is an extremely large and widespread organization of accountant firms that serves and advises over fifty percent of the biggest companies on earth.
- Price Waterhouse Coopers is PricewaterhouseCoopers (or PwC) is the largest professional services firm in the world. There are 120,000 people employed by the global partnership, in 144 countries around the world, working in four lines of service and 22 industry-specialised practices. It is one of the Big Four, along with KPMG, Ernst & Young and Deloitte & Touche, and was formed in 1998 as of a result of the merger between Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand.
- Ernst & Young is the current result of a long series of mergers; its oldest “ancestor” dates back to 1849. This huge company serves as the auditor for such major corporations as Wal-Mart, Intel, Coca-Cola and Verizon.
- KPMG employs about 100,000 people in approximately 150 nations, providing audit, tax and consulting services.
These “ Big 4 ” accountancy firms are the result of multiple mergers by firms that originated in Europe . Before the Enron scandal and its fallout in 2001-02, the top five accounting firms included the four listed above and Arthur Andersen. That accounting firm has since fallen from grace, and Coopers & Lybrand, the final member of the old “Big Six,” disappeared in the merger that produced Price Waterhouse Coopers.
